Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by uncontrollable and often irrational concerns bursting into mind. A tsunami-like urge to do something or think something in order to make those concerns stop or go away can also be present. Over time, OCD develops into a subconscious chain-reaction. It can be overwhelming and all-consuming and may seem to develop a life of its own.
Fortunately, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers approaches to reclaiming freedom from the cycle of OCD. The cornerstone of OCD treatment is called Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP), and ERP is one of my subspecialties. I also help parents of children and teens with OCD learn to encourage their children in the face of OCD without causing unnecessary conflict and resistance.
With a therapist as a guide, those suffering from OCD and their loved ones can learn the skills to reduce obsessions and ease endless compulsions. The work is difficult, but those who have been through the journey have found it worthwhile. If you have OCD, or are uncertain, and want to discuss your concerns, please contact me to schedule a consultation.
